The real barrier to making a drastic lifestyle change and going vegetarian isn’t the “why” of making a drastic lifestyle change, it’s the how. It’s easy to find good reasons to eliminate meat from your diet. There are moral reasons, spiritual reasons, and most importantly, health reasons why the move to where you are now is totally worth it.

But what really holds many people back from making this very positive change in their personal lives is that they don’t know exactly how to transition.

Baby steps

An important decision to consider before embarking on your vegetarian journey is take baby steps. You may be excited and want to choose “cold turkey” or a very strict vegetarian diet. However, making drastic sudden changes in your diet is not recommended as it increases the chance of more severe cravings. Make the changes one by one and gradually incorporate them into your new vegan lifestyle. Add more grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits to your diet, and start eliminating meat from one or two meals a week or leave meat out of one meal every day.

Modify your current recipes

Once you decide to go vegetarian, do not think that you have to eat a lots of salad. There are hundreds of vegetarian options that is not salad. But, start with current recipes. Modify those recipes by replacing meats with meat substitutes, such as, soy patties, vegetable cutlets, etc.

Stay commited

Any major dietary change, such as switching to a vegetarian lifestyle, takes some getting used to. It also requires some discipline to make changes. Yes, if you can honestly tell the world, “I am a vegetarian,” you will feel healthier and morally better, but the transition can be a challenge.  

Therefore, one of the biggest steps in making the transition is communicating your priorities and reasons for being vegetarian. This is very important in the first few weeks of your new life as you adjust to the diet and its health effects on your system. And since most plant-based diets go through a transition period to ensure you’re getting enough protein and vitamins, there are plenty of new emotions and innovations that require a bit of patience to get through.

So examine your motivations and get back to the “mantra” of why you decided to change your life in the first place. Like any great goal, if you really believe in what you’re doing, push the hard points because you want to live well and reap the benefits of eating and living in harmony with your environment and your body’s needs.

Be informed about diet

Sometimes the reason we don’t take the risk of going vegetarian is fear of lack of information as to what kind of food I can eat that is tasty and sustainable. So the obvious solution is to know everything about your diet and what happens when you start adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. A top priority for a new training program is to create a diet that meets the nutritional needs and gives enough variety without meat. The good news is that there are many websites and books you can use to get what you need in your diet and learn how to incorporate them into your diet to start life as a vegetarian.

Expore global cuisines

There are many international cuisines in which vegetarian dishes are standard fare such as African, Caribbean, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Middle Eastern, and Thai. You can explore these vegetarian food cuisines and find the ones that you like. The more variety of choices you have, the more easily you will adapt to new vegetarian lifestyle.

If you are in doubt about whether a vegetarian diet is right for you, consult your doctor before making any major changes to your daily diet. You should plan a diet that provides enough protein and nutrients to make sure your active lifestyle fits perfectly into your new plan.
