Ghee is quite beneficial fat as compared to various refined oils. As per Ayurveda, Ghee is more useful for Vata Prakriti.

1. Easily Digested

Ghee has a lower level of lactose and casein, making it more easily digestible than butter or cream. This quality makes ghee a suitable option for those who are sensitive to dairy products. Ghee can be consumed with a glass of lukewarm milk or lukewarm water about 2 hours prior to going to bed (1 Tsp with 8 ounces of water or Milk). This will help digestion.

2. High in Vitamin A & E

Ghee contains high levels of fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin A and vitamin E – both powerful antioxidants with numerous skin benefits. Vitamin A helps to keep the skin healthy by maintaining hydration levels and fighting against signs of aging, while vitamin E has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce redness and skin irritation.

3. Reproductive Health

The sperm fatty acids have been found to be very sensitive to dietary intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. Low DHA is the most common cause of infertility problems. One can relate this fact to the therapeutic use of ghee in Ayurveda to enhance the quality of semen [1].

How to use Ghee?

One should eat Ghee at mealtime and add it to the vegetables/daal when it is hot. Ghee is better for frying/sauteing and deep frying. Ghee is also superior to refined oils or olive oil. Many chemicals are added in the process of refining oils, whereas Ghee is quite natural, no chemicals added.

In french cuisine, butter is used after melting on heat which is better than refined oils/olive oils.

How is clarified butter different from ghee?

Clarified butter and ghee are a little different. Clarified butter is made by heating butter till it is a clear liquid and all moisture and solid part have been removed (by fine filter/straining). Ghee is also made by heating butter but at very low heat for better crystallization and preserving all enzymes. Some enzymes are lost at high temperatures.

Clarified butter is 100% fat whereas Butter contains 82% Fat. Ghee can be kept for months.

Are there different types of ghee?

Normally there are three types of Ghee, Indian cow ghee (yellowish), Indian buffalo ghee, and other kinds of Ghee from cow milk (High quantity milk-producing cows) like Jersey cows and cows from Brazil. Ghee from goat milk has more medicinal value.

Ghee from an Indian cow (with Hump on the back) is the best. It helps remove toxins from the digestive system and absorbs fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins D, E, A, and K).
